This New Leaf
This New Leaf was composed during my semester of student teaching in Fall of 2016. I had the fantastic opportunity of conducting the third band that semester, so naturally I wrote a piece for them. It was based on a phrasing warm-up that they used. This melody was unison for the entire ensemble, so I decided to enhance that melody with harmony. I was surprised that many of the students enjoyed the piece written specifically for them, especially because none of them had experienced that before. My favorite part of the process was seeing their faces light up when I had presented an entirely new piece for them. It may be used as a warm-up for older ensembles or as a concert piece for younger ones.
Program Notes: This New Leaf is a call for action and change. It’s simple melody calls to the performer to breathe new life into what they do. It serves as a reminder to the ensemble to play with their best tone, to be as musical as they can, and to consistently strive for improvement.
Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet In B-flat, Bass Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, 2 Trumpets In B-flat, Horn In F, Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba
